Question:
How can me and my schoolmates persuade our teacher to quit smoking?
My intermediate school teacher is addicted to smoking. We have tried to talk her out of smoking, but the principal told us to leave her alone. She feels she has to stop, but she can't give up her nasty habit. She says, "...it makes me feel relieved and relaxed after a hard days work of you guys...
". She's the best teacher I've ever had in my past 7 years, and none of us want her to leave. We can't force her, but we want to change her view of smoking. Any ideas?

First off I appreciate your concern for your teacher. She is lucky to have someone to be concerned about her smoking habit which, she would also be aware of, is one that would destroy her health.
Honestly, nothing can be done by anyone in this except when the smoker is determined to quit. Of course, you could be supportive by telling her all the harmful effects of smoking and how passive-smoking can destroy other people's lives too. I am sure she is aware of all this, especially because she is a teacher and she alone can quit smoking.
I am, however, not sure how, as students, you are going to help her kick the habit of smoking, because she should listen to you.
There is a likely chance of it happening if she takes to chewing gum when she craves for a cigarette. Initially it is very difficult to control the urge to smoke, so it has to happen only gradually.
Meditation helps to a great extent in one's attempt to quit smoking. Meditation reduces stress and so naturally the tendency to curb the smoking urge becomes more. Meditation is good for improving the quality of one's life in general.
These are only a few ways to help your friend (a good teacher is always a friend) but the real change can be brought about only with the smoker's determination.
