Hi p43boutelle,
Busing which is an example of affirmative action, promoted school desegregation and provided equal opportunity in public education. Busing was an affirmative action in that it was an attempt to compensate for the effects of past discrimination.
Busing children from school to school in order to provide school districts with racial balance was introduced in the 1970s. Busing for large-scale desegregation purposes was started in 1971.

The Black Power Movement was not just a movement for racial desegregation, but rather a movement to help combat America's crippling racism. It helped organize scores of community self-help groups and institutions that did not depend on Whites.

It was used to force black studies programs at colleges, to mobilize black voters to elect black candidates, and to encourage greater racial pride and self-esteem.
