Tejanos were people of Spanish heritage who considered Texas their home. Shortly after Stephen Austin arrived in Texas in 1821 to establish a colony, Mexico successfully gained its independence from Spain. Tejas was now a part of Mexico.

Stephen started his own colony in Texas after much persuasion with the new government. His colony attracted many American land speculators and settlers.

As more and more Americans settled in Texas, tensions between them and the Tejanos increased. By 1830, the Americans were outnumbering the Tejanos.

Used to governing themselves, the Americans resented following Mexican laws. Abolition of slavery in 1829, their dislike of the Spanish language etc. were a few reasons for their unwillingness to adapt to the Mexican laws. The Tejanos found the Americans difficult to live with, too. So there was increasing conflict between the two sections.
