While in Missouri, the Mormons were looked upon as a threat by their neighbours and in October 1838, the infamous 'Extermination order' was issued to them by the Governor and they fled to Nauvoo.
Life was not peaceful in Nauvoo too. After the completion of the Nauvoo temple in December, 1845, mob violence forced the Mormon exodus to Salt Lake City,Utah in Mexico. The leadership of Brigham Young was necessary in order to get every Mormon safely out of the United States.
