The great westward migration and the journey along the Oregon trail brought misery to many families like the Sagers. In April 1844, Henry, a farmer and his wife Naomi along with their seven children were part of the large group that moved west.

The journey of the 100-wagon train through the Great American Desert was the toughest part with water being scarce and posing difficulties to the families. Sickness became imminent with poor sanitation and bad water. During this journey both the Sagers died leaving their children orphaned.

Many of them braved the hardships of this westward mission by their sheer courage and determination in order to acquire free land in Oregon's Willamette valley.
