Hi jada1212,
The serfs were treated very badly before the Crusades. They lived in absolute filth and misery, working at backbreaking labour from dawn to dusk. The Crusades left thousands of them dead. So they were paid better wages after the Crusades for their services, as there was a severe shortage of them.
