British Mercantilism laid emphasis on procurement of raw materials from each of the British colonies so that Britain did not have to depend upon other nations for those products. The object of Mercantilism was to maximize exports and minimize imports in order to expand a dependable market for the finished products.
The colonies served as markets for exports and as suppliers of raw materials to British, which led to resentment among the North American colonies, eventually helping to bring about the American Revolution.
