Communal ownership of land by Mexican farmers constituted the 'ejido' system. In this system, the farmers could not use their land as security to raise money for modern land improvements such as tractors and fertilizers. They had to be contented with the use of hand tools for farming. They had no right to sell or rent the lands, though it could be passed on to their heirs.
Privatization of land was introduced by the Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari in 1992. Privatization helped in the expansion of individual land holding by farmers. It gave the farmers opportunities to use modern techniques to grow export crops such as coffee, sugarcane, bananas and strawberries.
