The Townshend Act of 1767 passed by the British Government imposed a small tax on imports like lead, paint, paper, glass and tea. This tax was to be paid by the colonists (patriots) in gold and silver which were in short supply in the colonies. This shortage was due to the Navigation Acts of the British Government that restricted trade and limited currency supply. The patriots were anxious about an increase in taxes on other imports in the future. They saw the imposition of these taxes as unfair and opposed them.
