In the mid-nineteenth century, the United States planned its expansion in the Pacific by building a strong naval force, so that it could acquire possession of island countries in the region and use them as naval bases when the ships crossed the ocean to trade in Asia.
In the South Pacific, the American Navy negotiated with the natives of Samoa for their rights to build a naval base there. As for the Hawaiian islands, missionaries had settled there as early as the beginning of the nineteenth century and sent back news of the good economic possibilities on the islands. Soon many Americans were leaving for Hawaii to settle there as sugar planters and business people.
