The surrender negotiations April 17, 18, & 26, 1865 between Major General William T. Sherman and General Joseph E. Johnston at the Bennett Farm near Durham Station, NC were important because the final terms of the agreement surrendered all Confederate soldiers still fighting in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, totaling more than 89,270 Confederate soldiers. This was the largest surrender of the American Civil War and ended the formal organization of the Army of Tennessee, the second most formidable Southern army of the Confederacy. It also ended any formal organization of the Confederate government cabinet, which was completely dissolved after the surrender.
