The Supreme Court is the "highest" court in the United States. It's job is to hear appeals on cases already heard and decided in the Federal court system. It can also hear appeals (generally only after a decision by a State’s highest court) that involve a "Federal question", such as an issue involving a Federal statute or arising under the Constitution of the United States. Fewer than 100 cases are heard and decided by the Supreme Court in any given year.
