From 1810 to 1821 the Mexicans fought against Spain for their independence, and eventually won on 24 August, 1821. As part of the Treaty of Córdoba, Mexico got all of Spain’s old territories in the Southwest, including the presidios, missions, and trading posts. Soon after, American traders and then settlers began to move into these areas. In other words they started settling in Texas after 1822 because the war with Spain was done and there were lots of opportunities for trade and commerce opening up in Texas.

The first group of American settlers to Texas was led by Stephen Austin in 1822, and they began to grow cotton along the southern coast of Texas.
