Rivers start from high ground, ie. they have to flow down hill. The source will be some kind of spring from where water is coming up from underground, but even that has to be fed from somewhere so the ultimate source is usually some kind of lake or glacier where rain and ice have collected and feed the stream which eventually becomes a river. large rivers will usually have more than one source where mutilple streams come together to form a river.
