Hey Jcguitarist2010,

I found this interesting Wikipedia page which describes all the various types of government used around the world, which starts out describing the United States as being made up by "constituent states", which effectively means that each state has a certain amount of autonomy in how they run themselves, but they are all part of a larger political entity which also has the authority to impose rule (law) at the federal level. The obvious example of state level and federal level law is in the taxation system where there are federal taxes and various different state level taxes depending on where you live and work.

This page also describes the various political divisions in the US system.
