Hi Melissa,

From Wikipedia...
The Democratic National Convention is a series of presidential nominating conventions held every four years since 1832 by the United States Democratic Party.[1] They have been administered by the Democratic National Committee since the 1852 national convention. The primary goal of the Democratic National Convention is to nominate and confirm a candidate for President and Vice President, adopt a comprehensive party platform and unify the party.

I guess the primary point is to ensure that there is widespread buy in to the presidential nominee across the party by making the process as inclusive and democratic as possible. The conventions also serve the purpose of providing a robust process to ensure solidarity around the party platform. Whether the latter goal is generally achieved I suppose is debatable.

I'd also suggest Googling around looking for news media articles with commentary about the outcome of the conventions.
